Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) May 08, 2012
On May 7, 2012, the chair of the Pennsylvania Coalition for Constitutional Values joined advocacy groups and concerned citizens from across the county to meet with Obama administration officials about ending the vacancy crisis in America?s federal courts, including the 6 vacancies right here in Pennsylvania.
Christine Stone, chair of the Coalition, was among 150 advocates from 27 states to discuss the vacancy crisis that is plaguing America?s federal courts. One in ten federal court seats is currently or will soon be vacant, yet Republican obstruction has caused unprecedented delays for nominees to fill those seats.
In addition to hearing from Attorney General Eric Holder and White House Counsel Kathy Ruemmler, Ms. Stone was among grassroots leaders invited to the West Wing to speak with President Obama about the working together to end the judicial vacancy crisis in the federal courts.
?We had a terrific discussion with the President focused on how local and state-wide coalitions can continue to speak out on behalf of average people who deserve to have access to justice,? said Christine Stone. ?As a volunteer leader of the National Council of Jewish Women, I was proud to share the work we are doing right here in Pennsylvania. Not only are we spotlighting how important the judiciary is when it comes to issues we care deeply about like health care, immigration, equal pay and civil rights but we are also sending the message that courts matter.?
While three nominees were confirmed to seats in Pennsylvania district courts by large bipartisan majorities this past October, Ms. Stone also urged Senators Casey and Toomey to quickly recommend to the president nominees for Pennsylvania?s empty seats. ?With two judicial emergencies in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, and four vacancies on the bench in the Eastern District, we need to continue to urge our home Senators to keep the process moving.?
The Pennsylvania Coalition for Constitutional Values is a coalition of diverse, progressive organizations that promotes the nomination of Federal District, Circuit and Supreme Court judges who are committed to safeguarding our core constitutional freedoms and individual and civil rights.
