When Nfl Players Retire They

(PRWEB) May 18, 2012

Family and relationship therapist Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil is thrilled to hear the NFL is offering counseling to its players when they retire (http://usat.ly/JGzbrR). As the NFL mission evolves, as they integrate families more into their programs, and on the heels of the death of player Junior Seau, they are understanding what can be a brutal transition from football star, to average Joe.

Only 25 percent of current and retired players engage in league programs and counseling, and Dr. Bonnie feels players would benefit from “exit counseling” as a pre-requisite to retirement. “Within the game, counseling may not be looked at as ‘manly’ or macho,” explains Dr. Bonnie, “but it’s a critical part of the transition and should be a mandatory part of a player’s exit.”

“It can be similar to what soldiers experience when they come home from the front lines,” explains Dr. Bonnie, “in that they aren’t prepared for their transition back to normal life.” According to USA Today, former players concur – it’s easy for the positivity that comes with adrenaline to turn to depression once life off the field begins. And football players are expected to be tough, so they may not be likely to seek out help on their own Dr. Bonnie points out.

Which is why it’s such a positive step for the NFL to begin offering mandatory counseling when players leave their team. In addition to working with a therapist, Dr. Bonnie suggests significant others and families check in with their football player on a variety of levels to ensure they stay connected. To this end, she teaches Smart Heart Skills and Dialogue.

“When couples or families engage in Smart Heart Skills, it should be a safe place,” explains Dr. Bonnie who suggests families have a set time each week or each day where they check in with each other.

Wear an emotional “bullet proof vest” – each person in the family should feel comfortable being honest about what this life change means to them and how it affects them. “Each person should be conscientious of the others’ feelings,” notes Dr. Bonnie, “but the person who is sharing should feel free to be honest.”

Don’t ask “what’s wrong.” If the football player – or someone else in the family – doesn’t feel like sharing, that’s ok. “Don’t push it,” advises Dr. Bonnie. It’s more likely that the person will just withdraw. Instead, give them space and let them know they can talk when they’re comfortable.

Seal it with a kiss – or a hug. These actions provide oxytocin and dopamine – hormones that make people feel happy and bonded to their loved ones. It’s especially important to take part in these gestures when the football player may be going through withdrawal from the constant adrenaline he’s used to experiencing.

Dr. Bonnie also suggests players take part in career counseling. It can be an important part of sharing the pain or emptiness from losing football and leaving the game, but then transitioning to what’s next in order to prevent feelings of loss and depression. This can be an important part of preventing familiar difficulties as well as thoughts of suicide. “Players should know that there are people around to help and to look forward to next part of life.”

With their family and the NFL behind them, there’s no way these players can lose!

Why You Should Take Online Depression Counseling Session

Article by Ian Howard

Online depression counseling is a good alternative for traditional counseling because of several reasons. If you feel depressed and need some kind of assistance to break free from your depression, you can take depression counseling therapy instead of taking an anti-depressant pill. However, you may want to take online counseling instead of traditional counseling. Here are some reasons why you should take online depression counseling:

1. It is more convenient

Online counseling is more convenient because you can do it in the comfort of your home. You don’t need to prepare your car and drive to the therapist’s office. It is more convenient for you to sit down on your sofa and listen to the advice from the therapist online. You will feel the same effect because you generally can communicate freely with your therapist just like you’re communicating face to face.

2. It requires less time

Driving to the therapist’s office may take more time than turning on your internet connection and start talking over Skype. It will save you lots of time, especially if you are a busy person. Actually, it is very suitable for people who don’t have lots of time left to go out and seek depression counseling therapy. You just set an appointment and you’ll be at your therapy session without ever leaving your home.

3. It is good for people with social anxiety

Sometimes, depressive people may also have some kind of social anxiety as well. It will be challenging for them to go out to the counseling place by themselves. In this case, online depression counseling is a convenient way for people with social anxiety problem. They don’t need to go out and they just stay home and start the session.

4. You can access the counseling from anywhere

What if you live in a village or out-of-town place which you couldn’t find a good counselor nearby? Of course, you will have difficulty when dealing with your depression. In this situation, online counseling is a good way to go for a counseling session from anywhere as long as there is an internet connection available. You don’t need to worry about your place being far away from the nearest counseling service.

Those are some reasons why you should take online depression counseling session to eliminate your depression. Most people have opted for online counseling because of those reasons. So, if you don’t feel comfortable to go for a counseling service, you can find an online counselor and set an appointment with him or her. Then, you can listen to the sessions from your home.

If you are looking for Melbourne counselling services. Then be sure to find help and counsel from a certified professional.

New Book Tells Of Journey

May 14th, 2012 Comments off

Fayetteville, Ga. (PRWEB) May 14, 2012

Faced with the shame of childhood molestation, Sally Simmone shares her story of guilt, depression and rise to inner peace through God?s love in her soul-baring memoir, ?Guilty As Charged? Forgiven As Promised? (published by CrossBooks).

?Learning to forgive yourself and others is just as important as learning to accept God?s forgiveness. I hope to provide inspiration for others, helping them claim the freedom they can have through Jesus Christ,? says Simmone.

From a picturesque upbringing in a 1950s, Christian home to her Baptist minister father, Simmone?s life seemed perfect. However, Simmone has always been plagued by memories of her sexual abuse as a very young child and the poor judgments she made as a result in her college years.

After 38 years of hiding behind a mask, Sally finally collapsed under the burden she had carried most of her life. Finally, when her long-kept secrets were exposed, Simmone sank into a deep depression. Enduring years of counseling, even hospitalization, her journey led her to discover the depths of God?s love. She emerged from the tunnel of despair into the sunlight of hope, knowing God?s healing and forgiveness had helped her through.

?I know there are many people who have been sexually abused. I want to give them hope through my personal story. I try not to dwell on the abuse, but on God?s love and forgiveness. My book is about how He can pick up the broken pieces and make you whole again,? Simmone adds.

Pioneering Book On Adding Horses

May 13th, 2012 Comments off

Flower Mound, TX (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

By reading a ground-breaking book that helps counselors include horses in therapy sessions, you can now earn 16 Continuing Education Units (CEU).

Harnessing the Power of Equine Assisted Counseling: Adding Animal Assisted Therapy to Your Practice by Kay Sudekum Trotter, PhD, was added this month to StudyCredit.com, an Internet approved provider of CEUs for mental health professionals.

Published last December by Routledge/Taylor & Francis, the book is the collaborative work of 28 counselors, psychologists and medical doctors who use Equine Assisted Counseling (EAC) in their practices. Initiated and edited by Dr. Trotter, Harnessing the Power of Equine Assisted Counseling provides a strong foundation for understanding the effectiveness of EAC, and demonstrates the powerful impact a horse can have in creating a new counseling dynamic. Chapters address using horses to help clients dealing with various traumas and abuse, anxiety, depression, atypical behaviors, social skills and communication issues.

Additionally, a chapter by the internationally renowned “horse whisperer” Pat Parelli offers a look at EAC from the horse?s point of view and demonstrates how to develop a relationship with a therapy horse in a safe and respectful manner. Through case studies, clinical protocols and step-by-step instructions, the book helps counselors understand how to add horse therapy to their existing practice. Harnessing the Power of Equine Assisted Counseling will also instruct students seeking to learn about this innovative approach that?s changing the counseling arena.

Counselors can purchase the book through Dr. Trotter?s website at http://www.KayTrotter.com or at amazon.com. When they give correct answers to 18 out of 25 questions in the StudyCredit.com quiz, they will receive 16 CEUs.

Dr. Trotter is internationally recognized for creating some of the first empirical data proving the effectiveness of EAC. She conducted a 12-week study for her doctoral dissertation at the University of North Texas to determine what impact including a horse in counseling therapy would have on a group of elementary and middle school students. Dr. Trotter?s clinical research produced verifiable evidence that horses had a positive, frequently immediate impact on clients. An article summarizing her dissertation, ?The Efficacy of Equine Assisted Group Counseling With At-Risk Youth and Adolescents,? was published in The Journal of Creativity in Mental Health?, a peer-review publication of the American Counseling Association.

For more information and a list of authors contributing to Harnessing the Power of Equine Assisted Counseling, visit Dr. Trotter?s website at http://www.KayTrotter.com.

Martyrs of Memphis icon
Depression Counseling

Image by St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral – Memphis
icon was painted (or "written") in 1999 by Br. Tobias Stanislas Haller, BSG. It is owned by Fessenden House, Brotherhood of St. Gregory, Yonkers, New York.

It depicts "Constance and her companions," four Episcopal nuns and two priests who died caring for Yellow Fever victims (the sick and orphaned) at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Memphis., 1878.

Martyrs and the cathedral

St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Memphis, Tennessee, is closely associated with two episodes of martyrdom known throughout the world. Both episodes dramatically reduced the size of St. Mary’s congregation, either through death or controversy.

Constance and her companions

Memphis suffered periodic epidemics of yellow fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection, throughout the 19th Century. The worst of the epidemics occurred in the summer of 1878, when 5,150 Memphians died. During this time, the Cathedral was considered the “religious center of the city,” because the doors remained open and the Sacraments were always available.

Five years earlier, a group of Episcopal nuns from the recently formed Sisterhood of St. Mary arrived in Memphis to take over operation of the St. Mary’s School for Girls, which was relocated to the cathedral site. When the 1878 epidemic struck, a number of priests and nuns (protestant and catholic), doctors, and even prostitutes stayed behind to tend to the sick and dying. The Episcopal nuns’ superior, Sister Constance, three other Episcopal nuns, and two Episcopal priests are known throughout the Anglican Communion as "Constance and Her Companions" or the "Martyrs of Memphis." Added to the Episcopal Church’s Lesser Feasts and Fasts in 1981, their feast day (September 9) commemorates their sacrifices. A traditional Anglican prayer memorializes the Martyrs in this way:

We give thee thanks and praise, O God of compassion, for the Heroic witness of Constance and her companions, who, in a time of plague and pestilence, were steadfast in their care for the sick and the dying, and loved not their own lives, even unto death. Inspire in us a like love and commitment to those in need, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ…

Episcopal nuns and priests who died from the epidemic

* Sister Constance (neé Caroline Louise Darling, b. Medway, Mass., 1846), superior of the work at Memphis, headmistress of St. Mary’s School for Girls.
* Sister Thecla, sacristan of St. Mary’s Cathedral and its school chapel, instructor in music and grammar (English and Latin)
* Sister Ruth, nurse at Trinity Infirmary, New York
* Sister Frances, a newly professed nun given charge of the Church Home orphanage
* Rev. Charles Carroll Parsons, rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Memphis; former U.S. Army artillery commander, West Point alumnus and professor; served with classmate Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer in Kansas, defense counsel in Custer’s 1867 court-martial trial.
* Rev. Louis S. Schuyler, assistant at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Hoboken, New Jersey

Approximately 30 Roman Catholic priests and nuns died during the same plague.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
The second historic/tragic event that St. Mary’s Cathedral attempted to mitigate was the 1968 assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The day after King’s death, Memphis clergy from many churches and synagogues met at the cathedral. In an impromptu move, Dean William Dimmick (later Bishop of Northern Michigan) took up the cathedral’s processional cross and led the assembled ministers down Poplar Avenue to City Hall to petition Mayor Henry C. Loeb to end the labor standoff that King was in town to help negotiate. Nearly half of the cathedral’s membership eventually left in protest of Dimmick’s gesture of racial unity.
