Every day is a new beginning. Treat it that way. Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be.” – Marsha Petrie Sue
New beginnings are powerful. They’re amazing opportunities to create a positive shift in our lives. I hope you are embracing this New Year as a promise of a new beginning full of wonderful possibilities.
Each January is when people usually set resolutions, and although there is nothing wrong with making them, I would like to encourage you to set meaningful and rewarding intentions instead. As Neale Donald Walsch said, “your life proceeds out of your intentions for it.”
The way I set my New Year’s intentions is asking first what can stay in my life and what must be released. When I find the answers, the questions then become: Where I want to be? What do I want to accomplish? What do I want to do? How do I want to feel?
Because between setting a goal and staying on track, we tend to flub-up; I apply a method called implementation intentions in which I set out in advance the action I’m going to take to achieve my goals; when to take it; and how to deal with possible obstacles. The plan is if (x situation arrives), then I will (behavior I intend to take to reach my goals).
For example, let’s say you want to reduce your sugar consumption; your implementation intention becomes: “If I get a craving for sugar, then I will drink a glass of water and eat a handful of pecans”. Let’s suppose your goal is to save $5,000 this year; your implementation intention becomes: “If I am paying my bills, then I will pay myself 10% from my paycheck to deposit into my savings account.” It is an excellent tool not only to help us to reach our intentions for the year ahead but to help us to achieve our daily goals as well.
