It is true to say that the secret of a winning formula is the ability to accept that there is a vast area of unexploited potential beyond what you currently perceive to be your maximum. ~Steve Backley
Why and when should I hire a coach? That’s a frequent question I get asked. So, I decided to dedicate this post to answer it. But before that let me define what’s coaching.
Put simply, coaching is a process to assist people to move from where they’re to where they want to be. The coachee participates actively and is considered the expert in her own life.
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Research supports coaching as a positive change strategy for enhancing resilience and well-being (Grant, Curtayne & Burton, 2009).
Coaching focuses on finding solutions and looking forward, rather than looking back to the past or reviewing problems. The main difference between coaching and therapy is that the first is about thriving and the last is about healing. Therapy takes you from suffering to baseline. Life coaching takes you from baseline to flourishing. (John Klm, 2017)
What brings people to coaching?
Although, people come to coaching for their own unique reasons, what I see is that often they make the decision because they may feel stuck in some area of their life, they’re dealing with a transition, they want to start anew, they’re ready to acquire new skills to handle a demanding situation, or would like to discover how to fulfill their potential and reach their desired goals.
Generally, people entering into a coaching partnership have a desire to change something in their lives and are willing to take action to reach their goals faster with less learning curves. They’re ready to make a commitment to finding another way to think and live. They want to grow, change and thrive in less time.
A coach enables a change process to occur, particularly when change is hard Click To TweetI believe in the power of coaching because I’ve seen the positive impact in the life of my clients, and in my life as well. I’m a coach and I’ve hired coaches to grow in areas or aspects that were out of my scope. Moreover, I’m looking forward to work with a business coach again.
I consider that we as coaches are soul gardeners who take the seeds you have and help you cultivate them in your garden, or assist you to change the garden, or sometimes support you to find a better garden.
As coaches, we facilitate your growth and foster the development of new behaviors and mindsets. In other words, a coach enables a change process to occur, particularly when change is hard.
Why should I hire a coach?
Hiring a coach would allow you to live more fully by going to the heart of what matters, accelerating the process of positive change, overcoming inertia and unlock flourishing results.
To help you consider if you should hire a coach, I invite you to answer honestly the following questions:
- Have you found yourself sabotaging your progress?
- Do you have a challenge at the moment that you are not doing anything about it yet?
- How much time would it take to find what you need to be doing on your own?
- What it will cost you in terms of effort, resources, and outcomes to ascertain on your own or with a friend?
- Would you have access to tools and strategies to make sure your patterns will not take over?
Most of my clients have felt they were not living the life meant for them before working with me. They were asking themselves, “Is this really it all life has to offer?” But through our coaching sessions, they figure out what’s missing, how to change it, and end our series with amazing goals achieved, and a new purpose. They got thriving results, a renewed perspective, new skills, and a system to use for life.
Working with a coach will help you illuminate your latent dreams and calibrate your sense of what's possible Click To TweetWorking with a coach will help you illuminate your latent dreams and calibrate your sense of what’s possible. When you decide to hire a coach it’s a declaration of your commitment to thrive through life. And having invested money is an additional reason to keep showing up for your commitment. It’s an investment in possibilities.
When should I hire a coach?
Keep in mind that working with a coach requires both a personal commitment of time and energy as well as a financial commitment. Your success will be determined by how much action and effort you’re willing to put into getting the results you want.
When thinking about working with a coach, ask yourself the following:
- Are you tired of not getting the results you want?
- How is this impacting your life?
- What are the consequences if nothing changes?
- Do you know how or where to start?
- Could you see areas where you may be holding yourself back?
- Are you able to invest in a coaching program without financial distress?
The best moment to work with a coach is when you feel fed up with the way things are. When you say to yourself “I’m done with this, I know there’s more to life. I want to move beyond this point in my life.” Those are the moments that tell you’re ready to work with a coach because your reasons for making a change have more weight than your reasons for staying the same. That means you’re primed to shift and ready for an action program.
